MSocial, Singapore (Hotel Review)

If you ask me where in Singapore I love being at the most, my answer will prolly be Robertson Quay. It’s literally my dream to own an apartment in that district. Being there makes me feel calm and relaxed, despite the nightlife being super busy there but somehow it never really bothered me. I’m always in awe when I’m there, the architecture of the apartments there is just spectacularly beautiful.

The next hotel we’re going to is just around the corner! Popular amongst the youth and the millennials, this hotel definitely came up on your bucket list, maybe once or twice. I’m sure!

MSOCIAL Singapore

Sounds familiar? I’m sure you’ve been here for your staycations or birthday celebrations. MSocial Singapore consists of 293 rooms, which is massive for a hotel that specially caters to the young adults and millennials. The concept of a loft room appeals to a lot of age group but do you know MSocial is not the first hotel to offer them?

Down by the street is another similar hotel, M Hotel Singapore. They too, offer loft-type rooms that attract the same category of clientele; the millennials. One thing that set both of the hotels apart is that MSocial Singapore took one step further by having a world-class french designer, Philippe Starck to design the hotel’s interior and guest rooms.

I know I’ve told you that the interior of the hotel looks like jail, just know that I’ve never been to one before. Nor do I want to!

CHECK -IN

It was a rainy afternoon when we came to the hotel to check in, so everything looks dark and gloomy. I don’t like how it makes my photos look dead and spooky too. I remembered the last time I was here, it was chaotic. It was a weekend, queue to check-in was long and everything was out of place.

This time, I came on a weekday; a perfect time for a hotel review. The hotel lobby was practically empty, which is a huge sigh of relief.

Due to the pandemic, check-ins are actually done outside near to the parking lot. Sounds weird! But it’s true. The size of the hotel lobby couldn’t accommodate a lot of guests at any particular time, what more with the safe distancing rule hence the weird but practical arrangement.

And because it’s a weekday, my check-in was done seamlessly and quick.

ROOM

The avant-garde, french design of the interior honestly doesn’t appeal to me. The idea of it is great, but since space is not a great feature of this hotel, I think simplicity is still the best. It feels very claustrophobic really.

Other than the lack of lighting, it feels very stuffy but for the affordable rates of the room, there’s nothing much you can complain about.

I love how the hotel use these cute little robots to vacuum the hallway and corridors! It’s so tiny and innocent, even though it tried to hit-and-run me. Cheeky you!

The room category that I’m reviewing today is the Loft Premier Room.

Due to the loft layout, the head space at the room entrance is rather low when you enter the room. If you’re tall, be a little cautious! Not really a problem for a shortie, like me.

At only 22 square metres, the Loft Premier room is visually smaller than the standard hotel rooms in Singapore. However the high-rise ceiling and the reflective walls definitely create an illusion of a bigger and spacious room and area.

The ground level is where the the living space is, which is furnished with a seating area, a flat-screen television and a working desk.

A telephone and a note pad is provided, which I love. I usually write thank-you notes to the hotel staff and the housekeeping agents before I check out. I feel that personalised gratitude is better to be read through handwritten notes rather than having to read it online. The television in the room isn’t a smart one but it has a chromecast function where you can mirror the screen of your device to the television screen which is fantastic for your netflix sessions!

Also on the ground level is the coffee-tea making station. I love coffee machines! It’s so efficient to just put a coffee pod in, press a button and voila! A cup of coffee, ready for you.

The brands used are also my favourites, Nespresso for the coffee and Raffles Lighthouse for the teas! They’re one of the best brands that most upscale hotels are using right now and I’m surprised that MSocial Singapore has it, considering that the hotel caters mostly to the young adults.

The closet is also placed near to the living space. Bathrobes and slippers are provided! And can I just say how comfortable the hotel slippers are? It really fits me perfectly, unlike other hotel slippers that are super loose and will fly off from my feet every time I walk.

BATHROOM

The shower amenities used by MSocial Singapore is of their own brand.

Due to the space constraints, it is not a surprise how small the bathroom is. Even for someone as petite as me, it’s really uncomfortable. I felt like I need to squeeze into a very tight maze, just to use the toilet or take a shower.

A bidet is not provided too. However! Due to the small space of the toilet, the shower hose is long enough to reach me so that isn’t a problem at all! There’s always something good out of something negative. Not all the time but this time, yes! Anything for a squeaky, clean bum bum.

On a totally unrelated note, I’m unsure why the towel racks are designed to be placed just next to the toilet bowl. It is unsanitary at best. A general rule for a bathroom layout, a towel rack has to be conveniently placed either near to a sink or a bath fixture. Which in this case.. it’s not.

On the mezzanine floor, is a queen bed placed facing the full glass walls. What I felt was lacking here is a another television. Having just a bed on the mezzanine floor is just awkward without any source of entertainment.

The pillows that are placed on the bed varies in their softness, a combination of a fully-soft pillow and also a firm cushion.

No matter where I go, all the hotels beds are always comfy! I’ve never really done a bad review of a bed before. A bad bed review? A bad bad review? A bed bed review?

Your bed is what you make it, so make it rock!

My stay was a very short one. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but I don’t find the whole millennial-vibe appealing to me. My idea of a staycation is a comfy, spacious room with a nice, warm bath but obviously that isn’t possible here. That goes to say, this hotel is perfect if you’re hosting a birthday party or a gathering. If you’re into something more relaxed and calm, this isn’t for you. I know it isn’t for me. Will I come back? Of course, provided I’m with a group of friends.

I didn’t opt for breakfast too cause in-room dining is not available here. For me, that’s a downside. I never liked leaving the room when I should just be able to order food in. But if it doesn’t bother you, it shouldn’t be a problem. Robertson Quay has countless amount of restaurants for you to explore!

The affordable rate for this hotel is unbelievable too. The price of a standard Alcove room can go for as low as $90, depending on what day you book. During the pandemic, I would suggest you to hang out indoors; making this hotel a perfect place for you and your vaccinated friends.

Have you been here before? Tell me all about your stay!

If you have any boutique hotels that you want me to review, just say so! But please, no sleazy ones okay! Have some mercy.

See you soon!

Aliff Daniel.
